Montessori is an approach to early education, guided by the work of Dr. Maria Montessori, that trusts children to learn by doing. Rather than sitting through one lesson for the whole group, each child chooses purposeful work from a thoughtfully prepared classroom and moves at a pace that fits them. Children choose their own work from the options a guide has prepared, then return to it as often as they like. Following a real interest is what builds deep, lasting concentration.
Instead of worksheets, children learn by touching and doing with purposeful materials. Ideas like quantity, sound, and shape become concrete things a child can hold and explore.
Every shelf is set at a child's height, in order, and within reach, so a young child can move, work, and tidy up independently without waiting for an adult.
The teacher, called a guide, observes each child closely and offers the next lesson at the moment the child is ready, rather than leading the whole group through the same lesson at once.
Children of different ages share one classroom. Younger children learn by watching older ones, and older children deepen what they know by helping and leading.
At Takoma Montessori, children ages 2 to 6 share a classroom, across our two mixed-age Primary rooms. It can feel surprising at first, but mixing ages is one of the most powerful parts of the method.
